SCIENCE EDUCATION IS FAILING

The general public tends to think science is just one among many possible belief systems.
WRONG!!


STEM education campaigns are mostly aimed at recruiting more STEM experts and professionals,
not at enlightening our
average citizen on the basic nature of science.

RAMPANT MISCONCEPTIONS
like Climate change denial, creationism and all manner of
pseudo science feed on this ignorance about the basic nature of science.
We support these by failing to emphasize several vital concepts about what science actually is.

First - science is not a body of facts about the natural world.
Science is a technique that can be used to discover and verify these facts.
It is a
truth tool we can use to counteract our minds' tendencies for
expectation and prejudice that can mislead our solutions of all sorts of problems and mysteries.

Second - the fallacy of revelation from authority
Gravitation does not work the wayit does because Newton or Beakman or Bill Nye says so,
but because
experiments and testing have proven that it does.

Third - science is not a rational right brain activity based in deductive reasoning.

Science is a complex holistic activity
Science uses intuition and creativity to devise best guesses or hypotheses,
then uses
inductive reasoning to draw conclusions from experimental results,
the design and interpretation of which are often lead by
logic and deduction as well as
knowledge of prior art and the general experience and general knowledge of the scientist.

Science is the most quintessentialy human activity
applying the whole range of our abilities to answer our most difficult and vexing questions.

We need to teach this to our children.
We need to bring it out of ivory towers and
away from the
minds of geniuses and into the daily lives of average children.

The alarming reports of ignorance about the basic processes of science,
so crucial to our survival in a
technological society has allowed special-interest groups with
narrow and dangerous agendas to gain a frightening beachhead in the minds of most Americans.

Less than 30% of Americans "believe" in the theory of evolution
and among those who do accept its validity, a minority are able to explain its details or understand its function.
